Peace

Pat Mossop
provincial Guardian of the Franciscan third order

There is a crisis in peace-making in the world
– wherever we look elections are being undermined
and populists are taking over and becoming dictators.

War, atrocities and bloodshed everywhere.
Jesus wept over Jerusalem, bewailing ‘If you, even you, had only recognized
on this day the things that make for peace!’

What did Jesus think were ‘the things that make for peace’?
Consider that ‘other Christ’ St Francis of Assisi.
Francis started his young adult life dreaming of military prowess, but that ended in disaster, disgrace
and depression.
He underwent profound conversion and by the end of his life had a reputation for peace-making.
How did he do it?

At the centre of his life was love – love of Christ and love of all his fellow human beings without exception.
He had the ability to cross boundaries and see life through the eyes of supposed sworn enemies.
He didn’t insist upon seeing justice done before peace could reign.
He didn’t take sides.
Because of his loving nature he projected love – and peace.

May we each day in 2024 do something that makes for peace.

Prince of Peace

Peace be still still still
On this night, heaven’s light
Peace peace prince of peace

Healer of men peace again

Shepherds meek wise men seek

Healer of men peace again

Peace on earth savior birth heavenly peace we will keep
Peace peace prince of peace
(hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah)
Healer of men peace again
Peace

“Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process,
gradually changing opinions,
slowly eroding old barriers,
quietly building new structures.

35th President of the United States
